Nutrition and Recovery: How Food Supports Addiction Treatment

Why Nutrition Matters in Addiction Recovery

At Bali Harmony Rehab, we believe that food is medicine. Proper nutrition plays a critical role in healing the body and brain during addiction recovery. Years of substance misuse often lead to nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, and poor gut health. A well-planned diet can significantly improve mood, restore physical strength, and support long-term sobriety.

We integrate high-nutrient meals into our comprehensive recovery programs, recognising that what you eat has a direct impact on how you feel, both mentally and physically.

What to Eat in Recovery

Whole Foods

Whole foods are minimally processed and retain their natural nutrients. Think vegetables with skin, unpeeled fruits, eggs, and grains in their natural form. These foods offer balanced nutrition and promote easier digestion.

Whole Grains

Choose complex carbohydrates like brown rice, oats, and quinoa. They support stable blood sugar levels, which is especially important for those managing hypoglycaemia and mood swings in early recovery.

Fibre

Fibre helps regulate digestion and moderates the absorption of carbohydrates. High-fibre foods like vegetables, seeds, and legumes are ideal for maintaining energy and gut health.

Protein

Lean proteins support neurotransmitter production and tissue repair. We recommend a mix of proteins from legumes, organic chicken, eggs, seeds, and fish.

Healthy Fats

Essential fatty acids from nuts, seeds, fish, and cold-pressed oils (like olive or flaxseed) support brain health and reduce inflammation. Omega-3s are particularly beneficial in addiction recovery.

Fruits and Vegetables

These are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Aim for a variety of colours and opt for organic and locally grown produce when possible. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables boosts immunity, stabilises mood, and helps repair damaged cells.

Seafood and Ethical Meat

Choose ethically sourced meats and seafood. Free-range poultry and wild-caught fish offer high-quality proteins and critical micronutrients like B12, zinc, and iodine, all of which are essential for nervous system regulation.

What to Avoid in Recovery

Sugar

Sugar creates spikes in blood sugar that mimic the highs and lows of drug use. It also disrupts dopamine regulation. Avoid processed sweets and sugary drinks. Natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup should be used sparingly.

White Flour

White flour breaks down quickly into sugar. It lacks fibre and nutrients, and may worsen gastrointestinal issues. Replace it with whole grains or sprouted grain alternatives.

Processed and Packaged Foods

Processed foods often contain unhealthy fats, additives, and refined sugars. Reading food labels and avoiding products with ingredients ending in "-ose" (like glucose or dextrose) is a good rule of thumb.

Additives and Preservatives

Chemicals like MSG, artificial sweeteners (aspartame), and phosphates can disrupt mood, sleep, and attention. Avoid foods with synthetic colourings, flavourings, and preservatives.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that may cause anxiety, blood sugar imbalance, and sleep disturbances. It also impacts adrenal health. At Bali Harmony Rehab, we work with each client to review and gradually reduce caffeine intake if necessary.

Hydrogenated Oils

Found in fried and packaged foods, these fats increase inflammation and raise bad cholesterol. Choose cold-pressed oils and natural fats like coconut oil or real butter instead.

When to Eat and Why It Matters

Stabilising blood sugar through regular, balanced meals helps reduce cravings, improve emotional regulation, and support consistent energy levels. We encourage clients to eat every 3 to 4 hours and to always have healthy snacks on hand, nuts, carrots, and dried fruit are ideal.

At Bali Harmony Rehab, our in-house chefs and nutrition team prepare every meal with your recovery in mind, combining local ingredients with the latest research in nutritional therapy.
